Ford GT40 — the sports car, the 4-fold winner 24 hours of Le Mans with 1966 for 1969 (though in 1967 with other body). It have specially developed for victories in races on distant distances against Ferrari (which won Le Mans six consecutive times with 1960 on 1965). GT40 GT-40P 1075 was the first car which has won a victory in Le Mans twice (1968 and 1969); this car used engine Gurney Weslake from a special alloy. A motor vehicle named GT (abbr. from Gran Turismo) and have added 40 that designates its full height in 40 inches (1.02 m together with a windscreen) as that is demanded by a rule. Engines of Ford V8 of great volume (4.7 l and 7), in comparison with Ferrari V12, volume 3.0 l or 4.0 l were used.
Early cars were called simply "Ford GT". "GT40" – so the project on preparation of cars for the international race on endurance was called, and Ford very much wanted to win 24 Hours of Le Mans. First 12 "prototypes" had serial numbers with GT-101 on GT-112.
"Manufacture" and the subsequent cars, MkI, MkII, MkIII and MkV has begun, were numbered from GT40-P-1000 to GT40-P-1145, and already officially were "GT40". The name of the project of Ford and serial numbers disseminate hearings that "GT40" was ostensibly "only a nickname".
